Pulmonary Function Test Prep

How to prepare for an upcoming Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)
  • Arrive 30 minutes prior to your test to allow time for registration
  • Allow at least 45 minutes to one hour for testing

Important Test Instructions:
  • Refrain from smoking at least 6 hours before your appointment
  • Avoid eating a heavy meal at least 1-2 hours before your test
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing to avoid breathing restrictions
  • Do not take medications that affect lung function 
  • Stop these inhaled medications 24 hours before testing
    • Advair (Serevent and Flovent)
    • Severent (Salmeterol)
    • Dulera (Azmanex and Foradil)
    • Symbicort (Pulmicort and Foradil)
    • Foradil (Formoterol)
    • Brovana (Arfomoterol)
    • Spiriva (Tiotropium)
  • Stop these inhaled medications 6 hours before your appointment:
    • Atrovent (Ipratropium Bromide)
    • Combivent (Albuterol)
    • Duoneb (Albuterol and Ipatropium)
  • Stop these inhaled medications at least 4 hours before your appointment:
    • Proventil HFA
    • Ventolin HFA
    • Maxair (Pirbuterol)
    • Proair (any form of Albuterol or albuterol sulfate)
    • Alupent
    • Xopenex (Levalbuterol)
