Request a Mammogram

Once a year, every year, make your breast health a priority. Get a screening mammogram.

Screening mammograms consist of an x-ray of the breast in women who have no signs or symptoms of breast cancer. It usually involves two x-rays of each breast, to detect abnormalities in the breast tissue. Screening mammograms are recommended on an annual basis to detect breast cancer in women who have no apparent symptoms.

Diagnostic mammograms are used when there is a breast problem, such as a lump, or after an abnormality is found on a screening mammogram. This additional mammogram determines if the lump or abnormality is benign (non cancerous) and no treatment is needed, or if the changes indicate breast cancer and further tests and treatment will be required.

Screening Mammogram Guidelines
  • Must be at least one year since your last mammogram
  • Must not be pregnant or breastfeeding
  • A physician referral is not required for women age 40 or older, but you must have a physician for reporting purposes
  • If you need a primary care physician, visit Find a Doctor
  • If you experience unusual breast symptoms at any age, contact your primary care doctor before scheduling an appointment
